Website Shopping Cart
Website Shopping Cart

If you run an online eCommerce store that has a shopping cart, it’s quite easy for your URLs and architecture to start squeaking like a bad wheel that pulls to the left. Often, the way these shopping carts are set up isn’t search engine friendly. Here are some eCommerce shopping cart tips that will keep the cart running smoothly and SEO friendly.

Product Pages

Product pages are the money pages of your site architecture. These are the ones that need to be the most search engine friendly. Many carts place them in a category similar to the following:

    example.com/department-name/product-name/

A better structure would be:

    example.com/product/product-name/
    example.com/p/product-name/

    example.com/prod/product-name/

Don’t use the department as most stores have too many product crossovers that can get confusing. If you should happen to change departments, the URL will keep changing, making it too confusing for the search engines.

Some stores go completely flat with no sub-directory. This can be risky but not horrible, as you need to watch out for naming conflicts and you give up control.

You should also avoid using URL parameters at all on product page levels. Use about 3 to 5 words per product name, omitting any stop words. Be sure to keep the URL as short as possible. If your marketing or advertising divisions require tracking parameters, make sure to write the info into the cookie and 301 to the proper page. Don’t be lazy and ignore good architecture. Make it as simple and natural as possible.

Department and Category Pages

Department and category pages present the biggest SEO challenges in any e-commerce package. Most importantly, ask yourself: Is there any value to the department/category page? If there’s no editorial content, you probably don’t need to index the page. Allow the spiders to just pass through on their way to product pages, using a noindex, follow meta tag and matching robots .txt setting.

If you insist on indexing your department pages, be very careful with the filters and parameters.

Also be careful to properly handle the “show all” if you offer that function. If your department pages paginate, make sure the most important items are on top of the page for the best crawlability.
