Features vs. Business Scale

How big is your dream for your business. Not every online merchant wishes to be the next Amazon, so think what kind of scalability you’ll need from your e-commerce software.

Some features that may or may not be available to you include: wish lists, gift registry, site search, real-time inventory, payment options, express checkout, product reviews, order tracking, website security, and order tracking. Instead of being entranced by all these attractive options, ask yourself, “Do I really need all these bright shiny virtual objects?”

It may seem very basic that you should decide according to your needs, but there are certain instances where you simply could become an impulse buyer and purchase more than you need at a price that cuts into your profit margin.

Deciding whether or not a feature is important to your business, requires you understand on the needs of your business model and your future projections for growth. The decision should depend on the size of your business, the quantity of products you sell and your budget.

Price vs. Budget

Speaking of budget, the next thing you should consider is how much you can realistically afford. Before setting a budget, try to browse first the websites of different shopping cart vendors. This will give you an idea how much such service will cost. Take note that the prices depend on the features included in shopping carts. And, be aware that some options only require a one-time fee, while others require an ongoing monthly payment.

Once you have set your budget, stick to it.

Ease of Use vs. Looks

Most buyers are more impatient when purchasing items online than when they buy at a brick and mortar shop. So be sure to demo the software first and be sure that the shopping cart is easy to use. Looking for a digital shopping cart with user-friendly features should be easy, but you should always try before you buy, just in case.

Of course, you want your e-commerce website to look nice, but in the end, you’re your website looks is less important that how it functions and how user friendly it is.

The key to making the right selection is doing your due diligence research. Do not settle for the first option you see. Investigate several vendors. Read reviews and testimonials. Read articles about shopping carts. Join forums if possible. The more research you do; the more information you will gather and the more likely you will make a well-informed choice. But remember: do not purchase anything that you cannot afford and do not buy something you cannot use.
