So, you’re in the market for an economical shopkeeper? With plenty of open source solutions on the table, and legions more hosting and domain registrar companies running to the rescue (and for your wallet), discerning what really is an economical solution to your shopkeeper needs really can prove daunting. Finding a good host company that offers eCommerce solutions can be a great temptation, but is it really as economical as it appears?

Taking a Look at the Hosting Company’s Shopkeeper Solutions

Most hosting companies specialize in doing something really well. They host websites. Name or domain registrars do one thing well. They offer domain name registry for competitive prices. Some medical doctors have become so specialized that their area of expertise can actually fit on the head of a pin: virologists and bacteriologists. What’s the point of all this? Simple: website hosting companies may offer some eCommerce solutions, and they may produce a site for you (or “help” you provide one yourself) that is a viable competitor. What they do not do well is provide a genuinely economical shopkeeper.

“But wait, it’s free!” Yes, it may be open source, it may be a “part of” your hosting package contract, but to be truly an economical shopkeeper, it should be more or less fully customizable with a very slight learning curve. Imagine hours on a Skype call to some remote location halfway around the globe because you can’t understand why you can only upload 25 items to your online catalog? That is not a good use of time if you can help it, and definitely not economical by any stretch. Even the best open source shopping carts out there have a “support group” of people who speak plain English…but only if you speak in HTML, CSS, Java or MySQL. Again, the learning curve eats away at your profit margin, and is a major consideration in determining if a particular solution is an economical shopkeeper.

Non-Negotiables: What Are They?

A final thought in determining what is or is not an economical shopkeeper is to identify your non-negotiable features before you shop. Alright, unless you’re a programmer, maybe you don’t know what these non-negotiables are, but as a business owner, you know what benefits you’d like, right? A certain non-negotiable that can easily become a litmus test is “upgradability.” Can your shopkeeper keep up with your growth? Can you start off with 25 or so items this quarter, but next quarter easily expand to 50? With a cursory glance at eCommerce software and hosting packages available, it becomes quickly apparent that not all shopkeepers are created equal. Paying through the nose for upgrades each quarter is far from an economical solution. If you want an economical shopkeeper, find one with a fixed price that can grow with your business easily, without the need of additional software costs or appendages.

Better yet, choose an ecommerce solution that includes everything from hosting to your SSL security certificate.

For a startup, check out http://www.ShopkeeperUSA.com for an affordable solution that is easy to manage. It is ecommerce software that is installed on your own domain. It is easy to get started, because it is an ecommerce website that is installed for you and there are no limits on the number of products.
