Web Shopping Cart Software

Our online business has grown extremely fast in the last year. We started with a very simple shopping cart and have now upgraded to a very robust one due to our increased business. IÂ’d like to take a moment here to offer a short shopping cart review contrasting the shopping carts we used.

Those wanting to sell goods or services on the web are often faced with the difficult choice of choosing a shopping cart. In this shopping cart review I will compare and contrast the two extremes of shopping cart choices and why you should choose one or the other. When I first started my website, I chose to use the PayPal shopping cart. My first and main reason for choosing the PayPal shopping cart was the fact that it is not only free to use, but I was a able to take credit cards without having to have a merchant account. Merchant accounts usually cost around twenty dollars per month plus a start-up fee.

PayPal Is A Good Way To Start

I had read a shopping cart review on the PayPal shopping cart when I was just starting my site. It too suggested the PayPal shopping cart was a good choice for young sites. The PayPal fee was only slightly higher than the credit card fee with a regular merchant account.

Another factor in choosing the PayPal shopping cart initially was its simplicity. Anyone with basic HTML skill will have no problem with adding it into a page. The process is quite simple. Log in to your PayPal account and click on “merchant tools” and then “shopping cart”. Complete the wizard and then copy and paste the code into your site where you would like the “Buy” button. Nothing could be easier.

It’s Not Perfect Though

In this shopping cart review I will also point out the downside to both the simple and advanced carts. There are several problems with using the PayPal shopping cart. First of all there are no statistics available. There is no easy way for you to compare your productsÂ’ sales. And there is no way to easily adjust for different shipping rates to different countries or areas of the U.S. There isnÂ’t a cross sell mechanism, and there is no way to easily tell if a buyer is a new customer or a returning customer. And wouldnÂ’t it be nice to compare this monthÂ’s sales to last? PayPal canÂ’t do it for you.

I decided I would use the PayPal shopping cart until I started getting orders. After I started averaging 3 or 4 orders per day, I started looking into another shopping cart. As part of this shopping cart review I will discuss the advanced shopping cart I moved to when business picked up. I decided upon the Yahoo shopping cart. This is also called a Yahoo Store. ItÂ’s sort of confusing calling it Yahoo Store. There is no way by looking at my home page or my order page that it is part of Yahoo.

Time To Upgrade

I joined the Merchant Solutions program Yahoo offered which included my hosting, email, and shopping cart software. It was an all inclusive package. I also signed up for a merchant account with a company in partnership with Yahoo. I was very pleased with the cart and remain so today. It seems expensive, but it actually makes me money with all the statistics, cross sell engine, and ease of fulfilling my customersÂ’ orders. I have now upgraded to the ninety-nine dollar plan. This plan also charges me one percent of all sales that go through the shopping cart. In this shopping cart review, I canÂ’t say enough about the Yahoo shopping cart. It is rock solid and I am unaware of even one glitch in it after thousands of orders on my site.

Oh, and did I mention YahooÂ’s excellent tech support! Any robust shopping cart can be complicated to set up. I have called Yahoo Tech Support on numerous occasions. I was never on hold for more than five minutes and the tech support personnel have always been very helpful. If you are selling 5 or more items a day, IÂ’d suggest looking at the Yahoo shopping cart. It could actually help increase your sales like it did mine!
